The design indaba takes place at the Cape Town convention centre and there was a wide variety of designs exhibited by many different designers, including : Architecture,Jewellery,Communications media, ceramics, industrial and product design, of a broad spectrum including a variety of other types of design, which incorporate education, furniture, fashion and accessories, creative agencies and finally craft.
I found various designs that attracted my attention, and each one communicated in their own unique way.
One of them was from a stall called Egg designs and communicated with their designs in a way which was simple yet effective in its design approach as a lamp, but not very grabbing for me. It didnt really stand out for me and was one of the worst designs in my opinion. It needed more creativity.
This design of the Kudu done in recycled material communicates the irony of South African hunting trophies. It is a very attractive and used effectively. It is stylish ,but simple giving the less is more feel. It is better to use these on your walls than the real animals, since you won't be killing anything or buying an animal head that was killed on purpous to be put on your wall. Instead you will be buying something which is eco friendly and animal friendy.
This Ed Suter Design of the coasters or placemats stood out quite a bit, because this designer of these coasters he takes photos of various things in South Africa that are used in a creative way to communicate, drawing peoples eyes attention to these unique and original pictures with its variety that contitute the coasters or placemats. They are made to be heat resistant and have a cork back to them so that it doesnt scratch on surfaces.
This bag is made from (FACT) which is part of a project that is trying to bring a message acoss through their photography expression in the pictures on the bag, decribing daily life in the townships. It grabs your attention with where the backround is done in an uninteresting colour, but as you look at some of the objects in the picture, they are done in parts of colour and makes it interesting. In buying this bag you help contribute to giving children in disadvantages communities an education.
This design of the Dreams of Africa chair, was in my opinion the best looking and most creative stand in the indaba,it did eventually win as the best stand. I think its the best ,because in Kwa Zulu- Natal 160 women wanted to create a legacy of hope and have something that will represent and remind them that they can reach for their dreams and also build a future .
The women finished their creation and it brings people from all over South Africa together as the chair has been travelling around for all to sit in it and share their dreams and is part of the Hillcrest AIDS trust centre. This chair has a beautiful message on it,that everyone can reach for their dreams and communicates how all can working together to create and building a future on that rainbow of our nation, sharing it together united.
